Quick answer
PE-coated paper combines a paper or paperboard substrate with a polyethylene layer to improve resistance to liquid, moisture and grease. It is commonly considered for cups, takeaway wraps, food-service containers and other formats where uncoated paper alone cannot maintain the required barrier during use.
The correct specification is never simply “PE coated.” Define the food type, contact time, temperature, liquid or fat exposure, coating side(s), coating weight, forming process and disposal expectations. A coating that works for a cold beverage cup may not be suitable for a hot, oily or long-hold application.
What PE coating does
The paper substrate contributes printability, stiffness and converting behaviour. The PE layer contributes barrier performance and heat-seal or forming behaviour where applicable. Performance depends on the whole construction: substrate, extrusion coating, adhesion, pinhole control, sealing window and finished-pack design.
Match the barrier to use
| Application question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Hot, cold or frozen? | Temperature changes sealing and barrier demands |
| Water, oil or dry food? | Liquid and fat exposure are different use cases |
| One or two coated sides? | The contact and exterior surfaces can have different needs |
| Cup, sheet, wrap or lid? | Converting route determines material behaviour |
Converting and quality checks
Ask for a trial with the intended printing, die-cutting and forming equipment. Inspect coat coverage, odour, seal integrity, curl, pinholes and leakage under the actual product conditions. Set an agreed sample reference and retain lot traceability for production.

For food-contact work, documentation must be assessed for the specific finished construction and intended use; it should not be inferred from a generic “food grade” claim. See our food wrapping paper range for suitable starting materials.
FAQ
Does PE coating make paper waterproof?
It improves liquid resistance, but the finished package must still be validated for seams, folds, edges, contact time and temperature.
Is one-side coating enough?
It depends on which surface contacts food or liquid and how the pack is formed. Define both the internal and external exposure before selecting the construction.
