One PE coated paper order, several independent choices

PE coated paper combines a paper substrate with a polyethylene surface layer. It can be specified around different paper weights, colours and paper types, then supplied in a format that fits the buyer's converting or dispensing process. The useful starting point is a construction specification: which paper, which coated face, how much PE, which finish and which final roll or sheet format?

YOUNGSUN offers PE-coating enquiries across different base-paper options, glossy or matte finishes, and single- or double-sided constructions. The confirmed PE coating-weight range is 5–25 g/m². The selected combination and coating weight on each face must be agreed for the order; this is not a claim that every paper grade and every possible combination is interchangeable.

Separate the paper weight from the coating weight

Base-paper grammage describes the paper before coating. PE coat weight describes the added polymer. Finished grammage includes both, plus any other layers. Asking only for a “100 gsm PE paper” leaves the supplier guessing whether 100 g/m² refers to the paper or the finished construction.

For example, a purely illustrative calculation is 80 g/m² base paper plus 15 g/m² PE on one face, giving a nominal 95 g/m² construction before any other additions or manufacturing tolerances. It is an arithmetic example, not a stocked YOUNGSUN grade. For two-sided coating, list the PE addition on face A and face B separately.

A lighter paper may suit a flexible wrapping concept; a heavier paper or board may suit a structure needing more body. Do not choose by weight alone: the base paper's surface, strength and intended converting route still need to match the proposed coating process. No universal base-paper weight range applies to every construction.

White, brown kraft and other paper options

White and natural brown kraft create different visual starting points. A white substrate can support a clean printed presentation, while brown kraft can retain a natural paper appearance. Neither colour proves recycled content, food-contact suitability or a particular barrier level.

Compare our white kraft paper options and brown kraft paper options as possible starting points for a coating enquiry. If you need another paper type or colour, send its grade reference or sample for assessment. A coloured base paper needs its own suitability review, especially where food contact is intended. We do not assume that every grade in the paper catalogue can receive the same coating specification.

Choose single-sided or double-sided PE deliberately

Single-sided coating leaves one face available as a paper surface while putting the PE layer on the designated side. A double-sided construction adds PE to both faces. Identify the food-contact face, the visible or printed face and the direction in which the material will unwind before approving either option.

Within the 5–25 g/m² PE range, ask for a proposed coating weight that matches the substrate and application. A larger number is not a substitute for checking coating continuity, adhesion and the converted sample. Define the target on each face and the agreed tolerance in writing rather than treating a double-sided quotation as one unexplained total.

Glossy or matte is a surface choice

Gloss and matte can change how a coated sheet reflects light and feels in the hand. Use physical samples to agree the appearance, because a photograph or the word “matte” does not define an identical finish across suppliers.

Equipment supplier Davis-Standard's extrusion-coating laboratory overview lists both matte and high-gloss chill-roll finishes. It provides technical context for surface options, not evidence of YOUNGSUN's machinery or production settings. Keep the approved appearance sample separate from the barrier and food-contact checks.

Water and grease resistance: define the actual job

PE coating is used to add resistance to water and grease in packaging constructions. Dow's paper-based food-packaging overview identifies polyethylene extrusion coating among barrier technologies. That background does not establish the performance of a particular finished roll.

Potential enquiries include food wrappers, tray or container liners and other protective paper formats. Specify what touches the coated surface, whether it is wet or fatty, the contact temperature and duration, and whether folding, sealing or printing follows. A coated face does not automatically protect exposed cut edges or make a finished pack suitable for prolonged immersion. For more detail on use conditions, see our existing PE coating specification guide.

Food-contact PE requires a documented construction

A PE resin suitable for an intended food-contact use can be selected, but the phrase “food grade” is not a blanket approval for the finished paper. Review the resin, base paper, colourants, printing and other components against the destination market and actual use.

For the United States, the FDA's food-contact information explains that safety assessment and authorization concern the intended use of a substance. Request documents that identify the proposed materials and conditions; a generic label is not sufficient evidence. Requirements for other markets need their own review. PE-coated wrapping material is not automatically baking parchment or approved for an oven or microwave.

From coated parent reels to smaller rolls

After PE coating, YOUNGSUN can arrange slitting and rewinding into smaller rolls for suitable food-packaging applications. Decide the final format early: a narrow converting reel and a short dispenser roll are different orders even when the paper construction is the same.

Include these delivery details in the enquiry:

  • Finished roll width and its tolerance.
  • Roll length or net weight, with the measurement basis stated.
  • Core inside diameter and maximum outside diameter.
  • Coated side facing inward or outward, and unwind direction.
  • Splice policy, edge quality, protective packing and identification needs.

Confirm the proposed dimensions and acceptance criteria before ordering; no standard width, roll length or minimum quantity is implied here. Review a sample in the actual dispenser or converting process. The final small roll must retain its agreed material identity and food-contact documentation.

For a quotation, send the base-paper preference, PE weight by face, gloss or matte sample, use conditions, finished format, quantity and destination. Explore our PE coating and lamination solutions, packaging applications, or contact the paper team to discuss the construction.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PE coating weight the same as the finished paper grammage?

No. State the base-paper grammage and the PE addition on each coated face separately. The finished grammage includes those components and any other layers.

Can PE coated paper be glossy or matte and coated on both sides?

YOUNGSUN offers glossy or matte options and single- or double-sided PE constructions. Confirm the selected substrate, finish sample and coating weight by face for the order.

Can coated paper be supplied as smaller food-packaging rolls?

Slitting and rewinding can be arranged for suitable applications. Agree the roll dimensions, winding direction and food-contact documentation for the proposed construction.
