Quick answer
Choose folding boxboard (FBB) from the carton’s job, not from a grade name alone. A useful FBB brief states the pack structure, printing method, crease direction, visual standard, food-contact needs, converting route and target board thickness or stiffness. Then verify the proposed grade on a representative press and packing line.
FBB is a multilayer, typically virgin-fibre board valued for a smooth print face, clean converting and a favourable stiffness-to-weight balance. It is often a strong choice for cosmetics, healthcare, confectionery, premium retail and promotional cartons—but only when the board is matched to the actual pack geometry and handling load.
Start with the carton job
Begin with five questions: What is being packed? How is the carton printed and finished? Which panels carry the load? Is the carton filled by hand or machine? What will the customer see and touch? A small reverse-tuck carton, a tall cosmetic carton and a chilled-food sleeve may all use FBB, yet demand very different performance.
Specify the required caliper or stiffness direction where the design depends on it. Ask for grain direction relative to the critical crease and run samples through die-cutting, folding, gluing and filling. Include ink coverage, foil, embossing, varnish and lamination in the trial: these operations can change crease behaviour and perceived quality.
FBB selection table
| Buyer priority | What to define | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Premium print | print method, coverage, finishing | smoothness, colour, ink holdout |
| Carton strength | pack dimensions, load panels, stacking | stiffness, caliper, crease integrity |
| High-speed packing | equipment and feeding method | flatness, moisture consistency, dust |
| Food or pharma use | contact scenario and market | relevant documentation and traceability |
Sample approval plan
Approve a mill or supplier sample only after it represents the proposed basis weight, finish and production lot. Record the sheet size, grain, caliper, moisture condition, print recipe and converting settings. A short written approval standard prevents a later substitute from being accepted merely because its GSM is similar.

Send your requirementsRFQ checklist
Include product, carton style, board grade or acceptable equivalent, GSM and/or caliper, sheet or roll format, grain direction, print and finishing process, quantity, destination, packing method and required documents. Our FBB product page is a useful starting point when the right grade is still open.
FAQ
Is higher GSM always better for a folding carton?
No. Higher grammage may add substance, but carton performance depends on thickness, fibre structure, grain, design and the converting process. Compare approved samples in the finished carton.
Should I specify GC1 or FBB?
FBB describes the board family; GC1 is commonly used for a white-back FBB construction. Ask the supplier to confirm the actual grade construction and data sheet.
