Quick answer

For US brands, sustainable paperboard sourcing starts with a precise claim and evidence plan. “Sustainable” is not a material specification. Define whether the objective is responsible fibre sourcing, recycled content, lower packaging weight, recyclability in a relevant collection system, renewable content, or a documented carbon-footprint programme—then request evidence that matches that claim.

Avoid blanket claims that a board is universally recyclable, compostable or lower impact. The correct claim depends on the full pack construction, coatings, inks, adhesives, regional infrastructure and the evidence available for the specific product.

Define the claim before the board

A brand may need a responsibly sourced fibre claim, a verified recycled-content percentage, a packaging-weight reduction or documentation for a retailer questionnaire. Each goal calls for different documentation. If the carton uses foil, film lamination, plastic windows or barrier coating, assess the whole finished pack rather than the base board in isolation.

Evidence checklist

ObjectiveEvidence to request
Fibre sourcingcurrent chain-of-custody documentation where relevant
Recycled contentgrade-specific declaration and measurement basis

Biobased claimproduct-specific, third-party basis where used

USDA’s Certified Biobased Product label is a voluntary programme that verifies the stated biobased content for eligible labelled products; it does not by itself prove every environmental attribute of a finished pack.

Put claims, documents and approval criteria into the RFQ. Retain the approved data sheet, certificate scope, artwork claim and lot traceability. Recheck them if the mill, coating, fibre source or pack construction changes.

FAQ

Is paperboard automatically recyclable?

No. Recyclability depends on the finished package and available collection and processing systems. Assess coatings, laminates and components together.

Can a supplier provide a sustainability claim for my brand?

A supplier can provide material evidence. Your brand should validate the final consumer-facing claim against the finished pack, target market and applicable marketing rules.
